Furnisher

Any entity that reports consumer credit data to credit bureaus — banks, lenders, collectors, etc.

A furnisher is any entity that reports consumer credit data to one or more credit bureaus. Furnishers include banks, credit card issuers, mortgage servicers, student loan servicers, auto lenders, debt collectors, utilities (sometimes), and landlords (rare). Furnishers are subject to FCRA §623, which sets duties for accurate reporting and dispute investigation.

Direct furnisher disputes under §623(a)(8) are filed with the furnisher itself (not the bureau). The furnisher must investigate within 30 days against their own records and report the results to the bureaus.
